Restoration of Lazar Rosenfeld’s Historic Building in Kharkiv Nears Completion: Photos

Restoration works are nearing completion on the historic building of Lazar Rosenfeld, a Master of Pharmacy, in Kharkiv. The works have been ongoing since early 2022.

The building, located at 8 Chornohlazivska Street (formerly Bazhanova Street), was constructed in 1913.

Residents left the building in the 1980s, after which it stood vacant for decades. Its roof eventually collapsed. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, attempts were made to reconstruct the building: a new metal framework was assembled behind the façade, but the project was ultimately abandoned.

In autumn 2013, Kharkiv officials planned to demolish the building following a series of expert assessments, but demolition never began. In the late 2010s, the building gained a new owner, and between 2019 and 2022, Alter Development undertook its reconstruction.

Restoration began in January 2022. The plan was to preserve the original height of the building along the ridge of the historic roof, while creating a flat roof on the courtyard side to accommodate a public space with views over the city.
